Lake Hillier is one of the pink lake in Western Australia the largest of the islands and islets that make up the Recherche Archipelago, Western Australia. From above the lake appears a solid bubble gum pink. It is such a significant distinguishing feature of the archipelago that air passengers often crane their necks to take a picture of it.
There are some reasons why lake hillier is pink coloured first because the color of the water changes as a result of green alga Dunaliella salina, halobacterium Halobacteria cutirubrum, and second , because high concentration of brine prawn. Once the lake water reaches a salinity level greater than that of sea water, the temperature is high enough and adequate light conditions are provided; the alga begins to accumulate the red pigment beta carotene. The pink halobacteria grow in the salt crust at the bottom of the lake and the color of the lake is a result of the balance between, D. salina and H. cutirubrum.
But ,actually the pink colour still a mystery until now ...

This lake has been declared by BirdLife International as an Important Bird Area (IBA) because support a large number of native and migratory birds.
